B.B. King’s music has earned him the admiration of many people. But in one of his famous songs, he contradicts the Bible. He says, “Hey, everybody, let’s have some fun. You don’t live but once, and when you’re dead, you’re done, so let the good times roll.” The patriarch, Job had a different view of what happens after death. Job was having a tough time. He had lost all of his wealth, his children, and his health; even his wife urged him to curse God and die. His three friends demonized him as an awful sinner who violated God’s law and whom God was punishing. But Job insisted that even though his suffering might seem as if God was punishing him, he believed that, in fact, God had hidden himself from him; and if only he could appear before His Maker, God would declare him innocent. And even if he did not get justice in this life, he assured his friends (in Job Chapter 19), “I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God. I will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with my own eyes.” Job knew that life did not end at death. He knew that God was just and would call all people to account. He also knew that sinful people need an Intercessor to find favor with God. The only God-approved Intercessor is Jesus the Christ who died and rose again to conquer death and the grave.
