She admits we often overdo shopping, housework, and decorations, but that these activities can express our love and service toward needy people, including our own families. Our challenge is to maintain a balance between the mundane and the significant—not to lose sight of that historic event when God became human for our benefit. We read in Luke Chapter 2 that shepherds were in the fields guarding their flocks of sheep at night. “Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them, “Don’t be afraid! I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior, yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem!” Christ’s birth changed history forever. For in Him, God, who created everything, became human—as we are—to show us how much He loved us. He grew up and gave us truth we could never know apart from Him. He died to pay our sin debt. He arose to prove He had won the victory over death—our greatest enemy. At Christmas, we celebrate His coming. We own Him as our Savior, and we commit to serve and obey Him as our Lord.
