Businesses often pay $5.00 apiece to get rid of old wooden pallets. But one company had a bright idea. They take junk pallets and turn them into expensive wood to make furniture — wood worth up to $6,000 a ton! Paul did just the opposite. He discarded what he once considered valuable because He discovered something with far greater value. In Philippians 3, he listed his religious pedigree — circumcision, pureblooded citizenship, tribal connection, orthodox theology, religious zeal, and virtuous conduct. Then he said he gave all that up when he met Jesus. He said, “I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake, I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with him depends on faith. I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead.” People who meet Jesus by faith and begin a living relationship with him think like Paul. Everything else is second best.
