Some time ago, a 3-year-old boy fell into a gorilla pen at a zoo. The crowd screamed for zookeepers to come and help. To everyone’s surprise, one gorilla walked over to the boy, picked him up in one hand as she held her baby gorilla in the other. She protected the boy from the other gorillas until the zookeepers came. Not every accident ends this happily, but this shows how God can creatively protect people. We find one of God’s promises to protect His own in Psalm 91. “If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home; for he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. The LORD says, I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with long life and give them my salvation.” Of course, this promise does not mean God’s people will never meet danger. Rather, as God often does, He preserves us during danger and trouble. And even if our experience culminates in the loss of our physical life, we know we have an eternal home with God. Paul expressed this profound truth this way: “Nothing can ever separate us from God’s love revealed in Christ Jesus.”
