Investors believed him and lost $20 million dollars before they realized it was a fraud. Con artists specialize in cheating people out of their hard-earned money. Deception is also at work when people worship idols. It’s why Moses told his people to get rid of all symbols of idols when they entered the Promised Land. He said unless you do, you will be tempted to believe idols are the source of your blessings. You will be tempted, not only to worship them, but also to follow the evil practices they promote. False gods will lead you away from the true God—the real source of your blessings. We read in Deuteronomy Chapter 12, Moses said, “cut down their carved idols. Completely erase the names of their gods.” Otherwise, the people would be led astray and find themselves estranged from their God and captive to their enemies. The best antidote to modern idolatry is in knowing and following a reliable source of truth. Jesus Christ came, declared Himself the way, the truth, and the life. He died for our sins and rose again to confirm that He is indeed God’s Son and worthy of our trust. In our world, con artists abound; but unlike them, Jesus Christ is forever worthy of our trust.
