Organizations that relieve these conditions certainly deserve our support. Our Lord demonstrated in various ways his concern for those who lack life-sustaining necessities. He fed 4,000 people on one occasion and 5,000 on another. He also healed the sick and raised the dead. He wants us to show concern for people by following His example. But Jesus also made it clear that satisfying physical needs only could not fully satisfy us. That is because we are not only physical, but we have spirit and soul as well. So He used the metaphor of physical nutrition to point us to that which can satisfy our inner soul and spirit. He said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” In making such a startling bold statement, Jesus offers us deliverance and safety from the worst outcome of spiritual hunger—eternal death; and He offers without charge eternal life to all who repent of their sins and accept Him by faith.
