From eternity, God’s plan was to offer His Son as the right Redeemer for our sins and the right Person to rule over His entire creation. In giving directions to Moses on how his people could approach God in worship, He said only a high priest approved by Him could officiate. God said this was a temporary arrangement until He established a permanent priesthood to serve all humanity. Later, in Psalm 110, God revealed that this coming High Priest would be perfectly holy, a King, and eternal. He is described as a priest in the order of Melchesidek. This ancient priest-king lived during the time of Abraham in the Hamitic land of Canaan. Since God intended to send His Son to serve as both priest and ruler over the universe, Melchesidec anticipated Jesus Christ’s coming. By dying for sin and rising from the dead, Jesus affirmed that He is God’s choice to rule over heaven and earth. So Christ is fully worthy that we accept and obey Him.
