In 1948, he became a U.S. Navy pilot, and a year later he became an officer. When the Korean War broke out, he flew daily missions to protect our troops. On one of these missions, he crashed from enemy fire and later died. As many young people do today, he saw a need and volunteered to serve. Years ago, another teen heard an angel say God wanted her to give birth to His Son. She eagerly agreed and her prayer shows her insight into the significance of what her Son would do. Here are Mary’s words found in Luke Chapter 1: “His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones. He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands. He has helped his servant Israel and remembered to be merciful.” Mary knew her Bible. She knew God would keep His Word. The poor and weak, though rejected and mistreated, were not forgotten by their loving God. She rejoiced that the Messiah was about to introduce God’s kingdom initiative. Christ still looks for young people who volunteer to serve him and are bold witnesses for justice and righteousness.
