Wow! Now consider what David said in Psalm 139 about the number of God’s thoughts for him, “They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!” Was David saying God had been thinking of him from eternity and would continue to have precious thoughts of him into the eternal future? God’s infinite nature permits Him to have infinite thoughts for each one of us. That is why in Psalm 121, pilgrims bragged about God’s care over them as they trekked through mountains on their way to worship Yahweh. “I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. … The LORD stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day nor the moon at night. The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.” Still today, God’s children celebrate His presence and care, even in the midst of violence and cruel circumstances.
