The one with 20 years thought surely she would get the position, but she did not. The overlooked teacher asked the School Board for an explanation. It replied, “Yes, you do have 20 years teaching to her 8, but whereas she has 8 years of teaching, you have one year’s experience teaching the same course 20 times. The passage of time does not mean you have grown.” That same principle may apply in other areas of life also. It applies when it comes to our spiritual development. It is one reason—if not the major reason–our wise Heavenly Father causes us to have both good and bad life experiences. A variety of learning exercises can help us grow spiritually. Life experiences give us occasions to plead to God for help or to thank Him for His blessings. Yet only if we cultivate intimacy with God through worship do we properly recognize His sovereign actions on our behalf. It was Solomon who said in Proverbs chapter 2, “Tune your ears to wisdom and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight… Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God.” So we should regard all life experiences as opportunities to grow
