But wise youth know that in growing from childhood to adulthood, they need to develop inner control–to exchange obedience to parents for obedience to their mature inner selves. And if they are wise, they will recognize –as all of us should–that we cannot rely on our puny efforts alone to live a productive life or have a fulfilling career. We lack the ability to chart our own course. We lack the perfection that a perfect God demands–no matter how hard we try. But when we trust in Jesus Christ and yield to God’s Spirit who lives inside of those who accept Him, God’s Spirit helps us pursue a productive course and accomplish far more than we would otherwise. He delivers us from our bondage to live self-centeredly or to satisfy our destructive desires. God’s Spirit enables us to love and live fruitfully we ought. The Apostle Paul wrote in Galatians, chapter 5, “Christ has truly set us free… But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Love motivates us to treat others with fairness and justice–whether they live across the street, across town, or across the ocean.
