DNA shows that a bush in California is 5,000 years old, and another in Sweden is 8,000 years old. But neither of these bushes is as famous as the one where God spoke to Moses. Critics have tried to explain away why the bush Moses saw in the wilderness never burned up. The Bible simply says God told Moses to take off his shoes because the ground where the bush stood was holy. God then said, “I am the God of your father – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” God said He was about to fulfill the promise He made to Moses’ ancestor Abraham 400 years before this encounter. God assured Moses that even though his people had suffered horrible injustice at the hands of the Egyptians, God had not forgotten them. There at that bush, God commissioned Moses to lead his people out of slavery. God’s holy and awesome nature has not changed. He is present in the world today and is still concerned about injustice. God still looks for people—both individuals and groups who will become spokespersons for justice. He still wants us to be change agents to convey and model His holy will and ways to others.
