Someone who has watched many people die said this: Few people regret their lack of money or status on their deathbed. Rather, they regret bad choices they made that led to unfilled dreams; their failure to spend time with their children, loved ones, and friends; or the bitterness they held onto against others. When God delivered ancient Israel from slavery, He pledged to fulfill all their needs—safety, food, and water—as well as their spiritual needs if they obeyed and worshiped Him as their God. They broke their covenant with God; but even then, God did not abandon them. He promised to send the Messiah to deliver them from their enemies, to reconcile them to God, and to satisfy their deepest yearnings. God promised that the Messiah’s coming would not only be a blessing for them, He would offer to satisfy the deepest yearnings for all people. In Revelation 7, the Apostle John quotes the prophet Isaiah’s words about the Messiah as God’s exalted Lamb. John says, “The Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” God makes that promise to all who turn from their sins and accept Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. God will satisfy their deepest yearnings forever and ever.
