Some New Light Bulbs Will Last Up to 60 Years

Electric companies now say they can make a light bulb to last 60 years and use 90% less power. These new bulbs will last 100,000 hours and cost less than three dollars to make. That has to be good news, even though it has no comparison to the light that guided ancient Israel through the wilderness. That pillar of light was so powerful that hundreds of years later, people in Nehemiah’s day recalled it as proof of God’s care for them. They referred to it as they prepared to renew the covenant God made with them. In Nehemiah 9, we read that after rehearsing the events of how God delivered them from Egyptian slavery, they said to the LORD, “You have a glorious reputation that has never been forgotten. You divided the sea for your people so they could walk through on dry land! You led our ancestors by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night so they could find their way.” Like ancient Israel, Christians also recall events of yesteryear. We recall the day our Lord endured the emotional agony of Gethsemane, the mock trial that condemned Him to die, the trek to Calvary carrying the cross, and the glorious resurrection that followed. When we recall these events, our hearts melt with gratitude. We offer ourselves to love and serve Christ forever.
