In 1922, Garret Morgan invented the automatic traffic light. This is just one of thousands of inventions by African Americans, even though many have never gotten the credit for their creations. Our world often passes over people with great skills. This almost happened to Joseph down in Egypt. He was in prison for a crime he did not commit. After he interpreted the butler’s dream, he asked the man to remember him when he returned to his position. Instead, the butler forgot all about Joseph until the Pharaoh had a dream that baffled him. When nobody in the king’s palace could explain his dream, the butler remembered Joseph. He told Pharaoh, “Today I have been reminded of my failure. Sometime ago, you were angry with the chief baker and me, and you put us both in prison. One night the chief baker and I each had a dream, and each dream had its own meaning. We related our dreams to a young Hebrew slave who was with us in prison. He told us what each of our dreams meant. Everything happened just as he predicted. I was restored to my position as cupbearer, and the chief baker was executed and impaled on a pole.” Pharaoh sent for Joseph and the rest is history. Sometimes we can help a person in need by simply speaking a good word on their behalf. The right words at the right time can be powerful.
