Gates replied, “I would trade every penny to regain my sight.” He correctly knew that sight is more valuable than money. The Bible tells us that our love for God must be our highestpriority. Moses expressed this for ancient Israel in Deuteronomy 6: “Listen, O Israel! The LORD is God, the LORD alone. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.” Notice how God is concerned not only that we love Him with all our intellect, emotions, and will, He says we must teach our children to do the same. When we fail to transmit values to them, we break the chain of knowledge, and it affects all generations that follow. And, children need not only explanations of what God expects of them; they also need living examples. Jesus affirmed that loving God must be our highest priority; and He added, we must love our neighbors as we love ourselves. We cannot do this in our own strength, so we ask God and His Son to help us.
