African American businesses are today the fastest growing segment of business startups. And the funeral business is one of those thriving segments. The first Black funeral home began back in 1876 in Savannah, GA. Since African Americans seldom got the respect and understanding from majority morticians, aspiring entrepreneurs decided to become funeral directors. Many of their businesses thrived and still flourish today. They made lemonade out of lemons. That’s just one way to live out what the Apostle Peter urged God’s people to do when they are mistreated. Here are Peter’s words in 1 Peter chapter 3: “If you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.” Peter said that instead of retaliating or sinking in despair when we suffer injustice or persecution, we should use our abilities to make a difference where we are–to turn lemons into lemonade.
