To sell products, advertisers often use the words “Free” and “New.” But some consumers are sharp enough to know that what is free may or may not be a good bargain. The bargain depends on the quality of what is free. In the book of Isaiah we read of God’s free offer of salvation. In chapter 55 we find this: “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink–even if you have no money. Come take your choice of wine or milk—It’s all free! Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you.” That same offer is repeated in the last verses of the Bible. Consider God’s invitation: He offers to give us food that will sustain eternally. He offers to satisfy forever our thirst for significance. Yet not every person will enjoy this. And the sole reason they will not is because they choose to ignore God’s invitation. The offer is extended to every person on earth, yet only a few choose to accept God’s Son who provides eternal salvation. So those who miss out can only blame themselves.
