Day 23: Doctors in the House
Yesterday I focused on fathers who are affected by abortion. Today another group involved in abortion is brought to light. And I’m glad about that because sometimes the physicians and nurses who perform and assist with abortions are the proverbial forest that we can’t see for the woman-centered trees. The medical community is an interesting player in the abortion drama because no one is in a better position to truly appreciate the value of what’s lost than those who understand the human body and its formation.

Yesterday I took a phone call from a 19-year-old African American woman who began the call by asking if I knew where she could get the abortion pill. I stopped breathing. I told her no, I didn’t know where she could get an abortion pill. I explained that my organization helps women who want to have their children. She didn’t respond. I thought maybe I’d offended her. My mind was racing, and I was praying. What should I say next? I didn’t want her to hang up; I felt like a crisis negotiator trying to talk down a jumper.

Day 22: Dear Dads
Discussions about abortion typically focus on the women involved. But more and more men are beginning to bring their pain to light, too. Today when I went to the abortion clinic to pray, a young Black man went in with what appeared to be his wife or girlfriend. He came out a short time later alone. One of the other women there spoke to him, and I could tell he was listening, and judging from his body language, he wasn’t in favor of what was happening inside the clinic.

Day 21: The Others
I’m off topic again, but only partially.
One of the great things about 40 Days for Life is that it brings together those from many different facets of the pro-life movement for a concentrated time of prayer, fasting, and outreach. Priests, pastors, citizens, advocates, legislators, physicians, and others put aside methodological, and strategic differences to unite around the common conviction of life being created by God, and worthy of protection. We’re all fighting the good fight of faith the best we know how, kind of like those Biblical examples of old mentioned in the book of Hebrews. I love that passage we’ve come to refer to as the faith hall of fame. Reading about those who subdued kingdoms, shut the mouths of lions, escaped death, and received loved ones back from the dead-that never gets old. That’s thrilling stuff. I can see why it’s in the Book; who wouldn’t be inspired by accounts of such victories wrought by faith? But then there are the “others”…

Day 20: Not So Great Expectations
The launch of the college program went very well. The young women were enthusiastic about being able to participate in the program in the fall, and they gave me useful feedback for the other work I do, too. All in all, a wonderful day and well worth the amount of work that went into my participation at the event.
