Recent reports indicate that the population of the world exceeds 7.2 billion people; and of these, 150,000 die from natural causes every day. Death is the greatest enemy of the human race; and the only person who has ever offered a bonafide alternative to death is Jesus Christ. He revealed His power over death at the tomb of Lazarus. John, in chapter 11, recorded the event this way: “When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.’ Jesus told her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ ‘Yes,’ Martha said, ‘he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.’ Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die’” (from vv. 20–26). WOW! Think of what this means. Those who are united with Jesus Christ by faith in His atoning death will continue to live when their life on earth ends. Rather than death being the end of our existence, it will be the doorway to endless life, in which we will enjoy all the eternal blessings God has reserved for those who belong to Him. Yet to enjoy such blessings, we have to make prior reservations—by repenting of our sins and accepting God’s invitation to trust His Son as our Savior.
