Pilots that fly into the eye of hurricanes describe the experience as unforgettable. They say that even though the outer areas of the eye have strong dangerous winds, the very center of the hurricane is calm. You can even see the blue skies above and the ocean currents below, while the center remains calm and peaceful. A hurricane’s eye illustrates the peace God’s people often experience in the midst of their turbulent times. Admittedly, God’s people face stresses and strains like everyone else; but when by faith, they pause to recall God’s sufficiency, they recover from their inner turmoil; they begin to rest in the peace that only God can give. The Psalmist celebrated God’s perfect knowledge of our situation when he wrote, “The LORD looks down from heaven and sees the whole human race. From His throne, he observes all who live on the earth. He made their hearts so he understands everything they do.” The psalmist celebrates God power to give victory over any foe when he says, “The best-equipped army cannot save a king, nor is great strength enough to save a warrior. Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory — for all its strength, it cannot save you, But the LORD watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love.” Only God offers peace in the midst of life’s hurricanes. We gain access to God through faith in His Son Jesus Christ.
