California’s Proposition 8 bans marriage between same-sex couples. Now, in what he views as a logical followup to Prop 8, one California man is seeking to ban divorce in his state as well.
Defending his half-serious/half-satirical campaign, John Marcotte says, “Since California has decided to protect traditional marriage, I think it would be hypocritical of us not to sacrifice some of our own rights to protect traditional marriage even more.”
A married father of two, the 38-year-old Marcotte has already collected dozens of signatures on a petition in support of the divorce ban. He’ll need 694,000 by March to get the proposed ban on next year’s state ballot.
Marcotte’s activism is mixed with equal measures of cynicism and snark. He’s a part-time humorist who voted against Prop 8, so he’s clearly out to prove a point about the hypocrisy of conservative heterosexual voters. But is he on to something here?
If the Bible is so serious about the notion of divorce, shouldn’t we be also? And if gay marriage is such a big threat to traditional marriage, isn’t divorce an even bigger one?
