Beyond the NoiseThose Old Testament prophets sure know how to jab us where we’re comfortable. Every time I read this passage, for example, I can’t help but wonder whether Jesus would sing a different tune if He physically showed up at a stylized evangelical worship event–a tune that sounds more like what His Spirit inspired Amos to write than what echoes inside our churches on Sundays:

Why I Didn’t Vote for Obama

Why I Didn't Vote for ObamaI am not and never have been a fan of John McCain, his proposed policies, his inconsistent record on many issues, his poor choice for a running mate, his thoughtless economic plan, or of his very negative campaigning against Barack Obama. It was hard for me to bear the thought of voting for him. It was equally hard for me to bear the thought of siding with a campaign for “change” that would passively allow each state to choose whether it would change the definition and legal institution of marriage, and that would not actively seek to change (read: “work for the overturning of”) Roe v. Wade. For me, neither candidate represented change or progress for the country, except on the issue of the country’s readiness to be led by a candidate of color.

Marion Jones: What’s Done in the Dark

I’ve been thinking about Marion Jones a lot recently. Once called the fastest woman in the world, former track star and U.S. Olympian Marion Jones says she will never run again. Following her September release from prison, Jones sat down with Oprah Winfrey for her first tell-all interview. I watched that interview in late October, and I’ve been reflecting on her sad story (and quietly praying for her) ever since.

From Fangs to Faith

In 2004, vampiric fiction writer extraordinaire Anne Rice traded her fangs for faith when she reaffirmed her Catholicism. Following this re-conversion experience, she dedicated her life to writing books about Jesus in a four-part first-person chronicle of His life. First came Christ the Lord: The Lord of Egypt followed by Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana and now Rice has taken a hiatus from talk of her Savior in the first-person to share how she came into her own in the faith as told in her memoir Called Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession.
